A capstone course designed for students with advanced training in geology and geological engineering. The course is designed to integrate knowledge from the major Earth science disciplines into a global perspective of plate tectonics. The analysis of contemporary Earth geodynamics allows the student to better understand ancient processes. Theoretical courses and thematic labs provide a detailed examination of the complexity and diversity of geodynamic environments.
This course covers the fundamentals of radiogenic and stable isotopes and their application to rocks and minerals to better constrain the timing and nature of their formation. It covers all the steps of isotope geochemistry of rocks: choice of an isotope system, sample preparation methods, analysis and quality control, data reduction, data interpretation.
